JET Speaking 은 국내 최고 영어전문 회사인 YBM/Si-sa 가 개발하고 국내 TOEIC, SEPT, TOEIC Bridge, JET, JPT, MOS 등을 주관하는 국내 최고의 평가 전문 기관인 한국 TOEIC 위원회가 시행하는, 초등학생과 중학생을 위한 영어 말하기 능력 평가 시험입니다.

JET Speaking 은 응시자가 각자의 컴퓨터에서 나오는 문제를 헤드폰을 통해 듣고 각 좌석에 설치되어 있는 헤드셋 마이크를 통해 문제에 대한 응답을 녹음하는 방식으로 진행되며, 응시자의 답변 내용은 원어민으로 구성된 전문 평가자들에 의해 채점됩니다. 평가된 내용은 여러 단계의 검증을 통해 최대한 객관성을 확보하였으며 추후  TOEIC Speaking Test 와 iBT TOEFL Speaking 에 대비할 수 있는 시험입니다.

English News : A Monster Storm

A month ago, a huge hurricane slammed into the southern United States. Hurricane Katrina destroyed homes and businesses and shut down power supplies.

Coastal areas in Mississippi and Louisiana were among the hardest hit. In New Orleans, Louisiana, the trouble continued even after the hurricane died down. New Orleans is a bowl-shaped city. It sits about 10 feet below sea level. This puts the area at extra risk for flooding.

The city has flood walls, built to protect it from the surrounging water. The storm punched four holes into these walls. The water poured in, rising 20 feet high in some spots.

Many people climbed to their rooftops to wait for rescue workers in helicopters or boats to take them to safety. Officials asked everyone to leave the city. Buses came to evacuate people, but there were not enough buses. Some people had to wait in terrible conditions for days. No one knows when people will be allowed to return.

A Long Road Ahead

Katrina could be one of the country's costliest hurricanes. Officials do not yet know how many people died. They worry that the number will be high. By last month, thousands still needed help, and some were angry. President George W. Bush said the recovery efforts were "not acceptable" as he left to tour the area. However, he promised, "We're going to help the people that need help."

A City Surrounded

The flooding that has paralyzed the city of New Orleans was caused by hurricane Katrina, but human engineering also played a key role. The storm poked holes in a complicated system of flood walls that were built to protect the city from the sea. New Orleans is an important port city because it is located where the Mississippi River flows into the Gulf of Mexico. But the city is not a perfect port. It sits in a swampy area that is mostly below sea level, so it regularly floods. Imagine the city as a dry bowl surrounded, right up to its brim, by water.

The levee system is a 350-mile-long maze of mounded earth, metal flood walls and concrete. Canals and 22 huge pumps are used to drain the soggy city after heavy rains. But they were no match for Katrina. The hurricane's powerful winds and waves overwhelmed the city's barriers. Four sections of the levees collapsed and water rushed in. Soon, 80% of the city was under water.

Putting It Back Together Again

The National Guard first used helicopters to drop hundreds of 3,000-pound sandbagsㅡas big as adult elephantsㅡonto the damaged levee areas in an effort to plug the holes. The Army Corps of Engineers also used large sheets of steel to create a temporary dam between one of the leaking canals and Lake Pontchartrain.

Once the levees have been patched, city engineers will begin the enormous job of pumping all of the water out of the waterlogged city. When will New Orleans be dry? Depending  on the weather, it could take between three and six months, according to Colonel Richard Wagenaar, the corp's senior official in New Orleans. New pumps may help get the job done faster, but it will still mean months of terrible hardship for hundreds of thousands of people waiting to get back to what's left to their homes and belongs.

In the months ahead, experts will study and debate different ways to make the city floodproof from future hurricanes. It is a project that will surely take many years.

4월 Session에는 대부분의 중학교에서 중간고사가 있었습니다. 이로 인해 몇몇 중학생들은 월말시험에 참여하지 못하였고 다른 때보다 충분히 시험 준비를 못한 것 같기도 합니다. 그 결과 전체적인 시험 결과가 저조하였지만 월수금 D,G 반의 문법 점수가 미약하지만 약간 올랐으며 화목반의 경우에는 D반의 독해 시험 점수 향상이 눈에 띄었습니다. 이번 달에 전체 점수가 부진했던 만큼 5월 시험에서는 자신이 부족한 부분이 무엇인지 꼼꼼히 확인하며 문법과 독해실력 향상을 위해 최선을 다하는 Academy 학생들이 되기를 바랍니다.
