Elementary School Learners

In this paper, we will explore ways to teach language at the elementary school level. The past decade has brought about a renewed interest in the teaching of foreign languages to young children. Research in second language acquisition has pointed to the benefits of a longer, sustained period of language study that begins as early as possible. (Dulay, burt, and Krashen). The studies suggest that (1)learners  learn more quickly if exposure to the target language is rich and meaningful; (2)an initial silent phase helps students internalize language, minimize errors, and improve pronunciation; (3)learners who are relaxed and confident learn faster; (4)correction of grammatical errors does not seem to enable students to avoid  them; (5)learners who begin language study before puberty tend to attain a higher level of proficiency than those who begin later.

이번호에서는, 초등학생의 외국어학습에 관해 살펴보겠습니다. 지난 10년간 초등학생 학습자의 영어교수는 새로운 관심을 불러왔다. 제2외국어 학습에 관한 연구는 가능한 일찍 시작하고, 긴 시간 지속적인 학습에서 확실한 효과를 얻을 수 있다고 지적하며, 다음의 몇 가지 사항을 제안하고 있다. (1)풍부하고 의미 있게 전달되는 외국어에 가능한 빨리 노출 된 학습자가 빠르게 습득할 수 있다. (2) 언어습득 초기의 침묵단계는 학생들이 언어를 내재화 하고, 실수를 최소화 하며, 발음을 향상시킬 수 있도록 도와준다. (3)편안한 학습 환경의 자신 있는 학습자가 빨리 배운다. (4)문법적 오류의 지적이 효과 있는 것 같지는 않다. (5)사춘기 이전에 시작한 학습자가 높은 수준의 언어습득을 하고 있음을  보여준다.

 Young children have a high success rate with foreign language because they are able to mimic sounds and intonation patterns well, they are curious about different sounds and codes, and they are not self -conscious(Lipton 1991). Some studies have suggested that the age of ten is also a critical time in the development of attitudes toward people of other cultures(Lambert and Klineberg). Foreign language educators would probably agree that early exposure to language helps students learn to listen and communicate, broadens their cultural awareness, and, if integrated within the elementary curriculum, can help students attain greater success with their basic skill areas.

어린 학습자들은 발음과 억양을 자연스럽게 흉내 내기 때문에 언어학습의 높은 성공률을 보유하고 있는데,  그들은 새로운 소리체계와 기호에 호기심을 보이며, 자아를 의식하지 않기 때문이다. 어떤 연구에서는 10세 전후가 다른 나라의 문화를 수용하고 이해하는 긍정적인 태도를 보여주는 중요한 시기라고 보고 있다. 외국어 교육자들은 아마도 외국어노출이 빠른 학습자가 듣기와 의사소통, 문화적 감각을 확대시키는데  도움이 된다는 생각에 완전히 동의할 것이다. 만일에 언어학습이 초등교과와 통합이 된다면, 외국어 학습은 더 큰 성공을 가져올 수 있을 것이다.
